RSUH representatives participated in the discussion about the Russian and British identities at the round table “British and Russian identities and cultures in a comparative and cross-cultural perspective, 1800-2000”

The Table was held in the Museum of London on October 21-22 with representatives of RSUH participating.

Welcoming speeches were delivered by Mr. Andrew Thompson, Chair of Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Ms. Kristine Zaidi, Associate Director of AHRC programs, Mr. Mikhail Shvydkoy, Special Representative of Russian President, Mr. Vladimir Panchenko, Chairman of the Foundation for Basic Research and Mr. Ivan Volodin, Charge d’Affaires of the Russian Embassy in London.

The topics discussed included the concept of personal identity and the role of museums, archives and cultural legacy in general in its change.

Mr. Sergey Mironenko, Head of Research of the State Archive of Russia, Mr. Dmitry Bak, Director of the State Museum of the History of Russian Literature and RSUH Vice-Rector Mikhail Kozhokin made presentations at the Table.

Dr. Alexander Chubaryan, Head of the Institute of General History of the RAS, made a presentation on the topic “The historical past as an identity factor: Russia and the Great Britain”

RSUH Vice-Rector Vera Zabotkina and Dr. Jonathan Oldfield, Lecturer at Birmingham University, moderated the panel discussion of comparative and cross-cultural perspectives in literature and art.

Dr. Zabotkina made a presentation on the topic of language, identity and the changes in Russian and British worldviews. She described the interplay between language and identity and their relation and reaction to changes in cultural practices and commented upon a relation between conceptual and linguistic structures, pointing out their multi-dimensionality.

The list of presenters also included Dr. Stephen Hutchins, Russian Studies professor at the University of Manchester and Dr. Laura Stockwell, professor of Imperial and Commonwealth History from the King’s College in London, Dr. Irina Semenenko, Deputy Director of the Institute of World Economy at the RAS, Dr. Olga Dmitrieva, Deputy Director of the Moscow Kremlin Museums, Dr. Catriona Kelly, Professor of Russian at the University of Oxford, and Dr. Ilya Doronchenkov, Deputy Director of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

The event was organized by Russian Foundation for Basic Research, Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK) and the Embassy of Russia in Great Britain.
